Oven-Barbecued Chicken Drummettes
Susan Stanley of Providence, Rhode Island, writes: "I vacationed in Alaska not long ago, and I can hardly wait to return. The scenery was absolutely gorgeous, but I must admit that the delightful ginger-root beer drumsticks at the Snow Goose Restaurant in Anchorage were the real draw. Could you track down the recipe for me?"
Although these are no longer served at the restaurant, chef Ron R. Sabado was happy to pass along the recipe. Accompany the spicy drummettes with cold beer.
Dulce de Leche Ice Cream Cake
Strawberry sorbet dresses up this terrific, uncomplicated dessert.
Griddled Tomato-Chipotle Salsa
This is another wonderful all-purpose salsa. It goes particularly well with eggs and any dish containing black beans. The essential technique in this recipe is the blackening of the tomatoes. That and the chipotle chile give the salsa its deep, smoky flavor.
Mussels on the Half Shell with Ravigote Sauce
Ravigote sauce is piquant vinaigrette that typically contains onions, capers, and herbs. The hard-boiled egg in this rendition gives the sauce body.

Cherry Chocolate Chippers
"I was 11 years old when I started receiving Gourmet magazine," says Kristi Tursi of Essex Junction, Vermont. "I am now 15, and I’m happy to say that I've tried at least one recipe from each issue. I love to experiment with new combinations of unusual foods. Maybe that is because I enjoy science and chemistry, or perhaps I just love eating delicious yummies! But this year, on my mom's birthday, I tried something cool: cherry chocolate chippers. These cookies are not as dramatic as my chicken mango tango, but they're quite a treat. Everyone at the party liked them so much that I spent part of the evening jotting down the recipe. So I decided to share it with everyone ... by way of Gourmet."
Burgers with Artichokes, Gorgonzola, and Tomatoes
These are equally good with either ground pork or ground lamb.
Cinnamon-Chocolate Ribbon Cake
This homespun dessert features a cinnamon-scented cake with a ribbon of chocolate cake running through it.
Pear and Dried Cherry Crisp with Coconut-Almond Topping
Serve the crisp warm, topped with vanilla ice cream.
Celery Victor
Jack's in San Francisco offers this nice, old-fashioned salad.
Individual Pear and Maple Cobblers
Maple syrup is one of New England's unique gifts to the culinary world. The natural sweetener is a wonderful complement to all kinds of ingredients but is especially good when teamed with pears, which are plentiful in fall. Here they're partnered in a cobbler, an old-fashioned dessert of fruit baked with a biscuit topping. Make sure to pass whipped cream flavored with the delicate syrup.
Apple Cinnamon Pie with Vanilla Ice Cream
Apple orchards of all kinds can be found throughout the middle of the United States. Interestingly, Red Delicious apples are a heartland original, first discovered in 1872 in Peru, Iowa. They are celebrated here (with their sweeter yellow cousin, the Golden Delicious) in a double-crust pie that's truly a "Delicious" closing to the Thanksgiving feast.
Herbed Egg Salad Sandwiches

Pan-Fried Chicken with Bacon and Thyme Gravy
Not much goes better with fried chicken than braised mustard greens or turnip greens, hot biscuits and sweet pickles. For a perfect dessert, serve squares of warm gingerbread with whipped cream.
