There are multiple stories around about who created the original bacon Bloody Mary. The battles about who was first or what drink is best have been contentious and slightly sordid. This version is a total bacon bust that includes bacon vodka, Bacon Salt™, and a bacon twist garnish. IT is so flavorful, you theoretically don't even need to add the booze—but in all honesty, the booze-less variety has yet to be tested. J&D's Bacon Salt is available online or at specialty food stores. If necessary, bacon flavored vodka, such as Bakon™ can be special ordered at your local liquor store.

Recipe information

  • Yield

    Makes about 3 cups

Ingredients

2 tablespoons Worcestershire sauce
2 tablespoons freshly squeezed lemon juice
1 teaspoon prepared horseradish
1/2 teaspoon hot sauce, such as Tabasco brand
1/4 teaspoon celery seed
1/4 teaspoon ground coriander
1/4 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper
1/4 teaspoon salt
2 cups (16 ounces) tomato juice
1/2-3/4 cup (4-6 ounces) bacon flavored vodka, or substitute plain
2 tablespoons Bacon Salt, such as J&D's brand
Lime wedges
Bacon Twists for garnish

Preparation

  1. Step 1

In a large measuring cup or pitcher, combine the Worcestershire sauce, lemon juice, horseradish, hot sauce, celery seed, coriander, pepper, and salt. Add the tomato juice and vodka and stir well. Refrigerate until ready to serve.

    Step 2

Prepare 4 (8 ounce) drink glasses by rubbing the rim with a lime wedge and dipping in the Bacon Salt. Fill each glass with plenty of ice and divide the Bloody Mary mixture evenly among the glasses. Garnish each glass with a bacon twist and a lime wedge and serve immediately.

The kimchi brine is the secret hero here; just a splash of it brightens the cocktail while deepening it with a little funky je ne sais quoi.
Gourmet’s version of this perfect summer drink mixes the ideal ratio of vodka with cranberry and grapefruit juices, right in the glass.
With elderflower liqueur, mint, and prosecco, the effervescent Hugo spritz cocktail is a hit year round, but particularly on warm nights.
An ex-boyfriend’s mom—who emigrated from Colombia—made the best meat sauce—she would fry sofrito for the base and simply add cooked ground beef, sazón, and jarred tomato sauce. My version is a bit more bougie—it calls for caramelized tomato paste and white wine—but the result is just as good.
An espresso-and-cumin-spiked rub (or brine) gives this smoked chicken impressive flavor.
This is what I call a fridge-eater recipe. The key here is getting a nice sear on the sausage and cooking the tomato down until it coats the sausage and vegetables well.
This summery sheet-pan dinner celebrates the bounty of the season and couldn't be simpler to make. Chorizo plays nicely with the salad, thanks to its spice.
