Make Ahead

Basic Mead

The mead you make with this recipe will reflect the qualities of the honey you use. Consult our guide to mead and consider using a first-rate varietal honey. Because mead is fairly high in alcohol (10- to 12-percent by volume), I recommend 12-ouncebottles over 22-ounce ones.

Atole de Piña

These nourishing atoles — fruit-flavored drinks thickened with corn tortilla flour — are served much like hot chocolate. They are warming on cold mornings or evenings.

Almond Horchata

Horchata is a refreshing iced drink served in Mexico. It is made with almonds, raw rice, or melon seeds.

Minted Mai Tai

The mai tai was invented in 1944 at the original Trader Vic's restaurant in Oakland, California. There are many variations of the drink, including this mint-accented version. Look for almond syrup in the coffee-and-tea section of the supermarket.

White Zinfandel Sangria

The choice of fresh fruit depends entirely on what's available, so don't be afraid to experiment. Mangoes, pineapples, apples, and strawberries are some fruits to consider, although the drink should include at least one citrus fruit, just for some zing. Serve this sangria at picnics or at alfresco luncheons. It pairs well with savory Spanish foods such as paella.

Berry-Vodka Cooler

Omit the alcohol for a kid-friendly drink.

Tamarind Cooler

Can be prepared in 45 minutes or less but requires additional unattended time.
